5 Common Mistakes

Let’s face it: stepping in front of the camera for a boudoir session can be intimidating. But don’t worry — you’re not alone. Many of my clients come to me feeling nervous, and often, they’ve made one or more of these common mistakes without even realising it. Whether you’ve never done a boudoir shoot before or are unsure how to prepare, knowing what to avoid can help you have the best experience possible. Let’s break down the five mistakes I often see and how to avoid them.”

Mistake #1: Overthinking the Outfits

  • What Happens: Clients often feel like they need to buy new, expensive lingerie or follow certain fashion rules.

  • Solution: Comfort is key. The best outfits are those that make you feel confident and at ease.

  • Tip: Consider pieces like robes, bodysuits, or personal items (e.g., partner’s shirt) to give you flexibility and comfort. Honey Birdette is lovely, but it doesn’t suit all budgets or styling preferences.

Mistake #2: Skipping the Prep (or Overdoing It)

  • What Happens: Clients either overdo their skincare and grooming or neglect it altogether.

  • Solution: A balanced approach to skincare, hair, and nails before the shoot. Moisturise the night before, avoid heavy tanning, and make sure your hair is freshly cut or coloured and clean.

  • Tip: Book your hair appointment a week before the session, so your hair is fresh and avoids any staining for brunettes. If you love your nails done, have them booked a few days prior, don’t forget your toes.

Mistake #3: Feeling Pressure to Pose Perfectly

  • What Happens: Clients think they need to know exactly how to pose to look flawless.

  • Solution: I will guide you through every step and suggest poses highlighting your best angles.

  • Tip: Collect some poses you want to try — create an album on your phone or send them directly to me.

Mistake #4: Forgetting the Importance of Confidence

  • What Happens: Clients sometimes feel they need to be “perfect” or resemble models.

  • Solution: My clients are not models; they are everyday women. Boudoir is about self-love, not perfection. Confidence shines through in photos more than any pose or outfit.

  • Tip: Think of the shoot as a celebration of who you are.

Mistake #5: Letting Body Image Insecurities Hold You Back

  • What Happens: Many clients worry they’re not “fit enough” or “flawless enough” for a boudoir shoot, often letting body image insecurities take over before the session begins.

  • Solution: Boudoir is about embracing who you are right now, no matter what. Confidence shines brightest when you let go of self-doubt and focus on celebrating your body just as it is.

  • Tip: You don’t need to look like anyone else. I’m here to make you feel gorgeous and empowered in your skin, and no body type or shape is off-limits.
